The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has announced new rules that will expand on the city’s existing commercial organic waste separation program on August 15th, 2018.

How to know if your business is covered under the new DSNY rules:

Restaurants 15,000 sq. ft.

Restaurants with a floor area of at least 15,000 square feet

100 or more locations

Food Retailers 25,000 sq. ft.

Food retailers (grocery stores) having a floor area space of at least 25,000 square feet.

How to Comply to Avoid Violations:

    1. Provide labeled containers specifically for organics and post signs with instructions in areas

          where staff handles organics

    2. Post signs with instructions for employees to ensure that organics are not mixed with garbage

         or recyclables

    3. Arrange for organics to be transported or processed separately from garbage and recycling
